Hello everyone! Amy here!
こんにちは!永美です♪
Today I wanted to highlight the minor differences between the similar kanji 持、待つ、and 特. While minor differences, they are very important - you wouldn't want to try and say "Wait!" and accidentally say "Hold this for me!", would you?
今回は 「待つと持つと特の筆画の相違」を紹介したいと思います。外国人に教えてあげるのでほとんど英語を使います。
The reason I picked out these three characters is that I often mix up two of them when reading. Only recently did I look hard and realize which one is which. I'll get to that in a bit, but I want to show you why they're so similar:

The reason I picked out these three characters is that I often mix up two of them when reading. Only recently did I look hard and realize which one is which. I'll get to that in a bit, but I want to show you why they're so similar:
寺 → 持
寺 → 待
寺 → 特
They share a character!
The character 寺 (てら/tera → temple) appears in the right half of all three characters!
Now that we've got that out of the way, let's analyze the differences!
Let's look at 持つ:
まずは「持つ」:
Now that we've got that out of the way, let's analyze the differences!
Let's look at 持つ:
まずは「持つ」:
持つ
もつ / motsu → to hold
Now, 待つ:
待つ
まつ/matsu→ to wait
They both have those lines on the side. But guess what? The lines in 待つ also show up in another motion verb! Take a look:
行く
待つ
Yep! "To go" and "To wait" both share those same lines!
So I always like to think...
So I always like to think...
Wait before you Go!!
Yeah, it's simple, but hey, it keeps the characters connected in my mind!
So now we know how to keep 待つ straight in our minds - and that's the biggest challenge, really. I've written 特 a million times, so it's easier for me to keep it straight. But hey, it might help if I point out one radical...

牛 → 特
牛 (牛/ushi → cow) is on the left side of 特!
So if you want to play on the Hindi belief that "cows are special", then that's how you can remember what 特 means!
So, that leaves us with 持つ. I mentioned it earlier, but we're finally getting to it. I don't know enough kanji to really compare 持つ with anything, but now all we have to do is declare it the odd-one-out, because we Wait Before We Go and Cows are Special.
So, now that we've delved into the world of radicals, you can begin to see similarities between kanji than not only make them easier to write, but also easier to read and recognize.
Well that was fun! Until next time!
