Hello everyone!
こんにちは!永美です♪
I got back from Japan a little over a week ago! I'm still kind of sad to be home, but now I can prepare for my next trip, which will hopefully be sooner than later! I didn't write any blog posts while I was there because there was absolutely no time, but I'm looking forward to remembering the trip by writing about it afterwards!!
先週日本から帰国しました。本当に楽しかった旅行でした!後で教えるつもりです。
Anyways, to the point.
とにかく、今日のトピックは翻訳です。
に日本語から英語に翻訳なので英語だけ書いてごめんなさい。
Translating any two languages is no easy game, but the difficulty obviously depends on which two languages you look at. For example, if you go between English and practically any Romance Language (ex: French, Spanish, Italian), it's more or less a cut-and-paste system.
Japanese, on the other hand...
Cutting and pasting gets you nowhere.
I just translated an email I got, and there is maybe one literal translation out of the whole email. Really, how can you imagine "お客様からのアンケートの中から一部紹介します" (literally "(I) will show you one part from the surveys from the customers") being translated as "I want to show you one of the surveys we received" ?
Granted, they are very similar. But the more you look at the literal translation and the transliteration, the more you see how translating to and from Japanese is more art than science.
(I actually can't take credit for that - I read something where someone said translating Japanese was like an art, and I fully agree.)
I will (hopefully) bring up more translation situations as the arise! This one had a wimpy example, but it was good enough to plant the seed into your brains!
Until next time!
